CEU Hours: 2 | Format: Self-paced | Audience: Licensed Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants, Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapist Assistants

Course Overview:
A practical, case‑driven course for therapy clinicians on pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, high‑impact drug classes, polypharmacy safety, and interprofessional communication—focused on functional implications and fall‑prevention in therapy

What You’ll Learn:

      • Understand how medications affect movement, balance, cognition, endurance, and participation in therapy sessions, including timing considerations like peak opioid effects.

      • Spot early warning signs of medication‑related problems—such as dizziness, orthostatic hypotension, sedation, confusion, and fall risk—and adjust care accordingly

      • Identify the functional impact of high‑frequency drug classes like NSAIDs, opioids, beta‑blockers, diuretics, anticoagulants, SSRIs/SNRIs, muscle relaxants, gabapentinoids, and benzodiazepines.

      • Navigate polypharmacy confidently, understanding how multiple medications interact and elevate patient safety risks in rehab settings.

      • Modify treatment plans and guard appropriately when medications influence vital signs, fatigue, gait stability, or cognition.

      • Apply structured communication strategies (SBAR) to escalate medication concerns promptly and effectively to the healthcare team.
      • Document medication‑related findings clearly and defensibly to support safety, prevent errors, and ensure alignment across the care team.
      • Use case‑based reasoning to integrate medication knowledge into everyday decision‑making for stronger clinical outcomes.
